O YOU SAINTS AND BODHISATTVAS! THANK YOU FOR YOUR GRACE, THANK YOU FOR YOUR LOVE, THANK YOU FOR THE GIFTS YOU HAVE GIVEN US! THERE`S A RADIO IN YOUR BRAIN, IT BOTH SENDS AND RECEIVES!

You ever notice, when watching a good comic,

he or she will lay down 4 or 5 good jokes, then

sometime in the rhythm of his talk he`ll slip in

a serious statement- a real zinger - and people

will laugh at that statement, too, but the laughter

starts to fade into an ugly silence.

"The terror of nothing to think about."
That`s how T.S. Eliot describes it.

Most big crowds in North America are

very uncomfortable with a silence longer than 5

seconds.

We`ve been conditioned to think we need

almost constant distraction.

       Of course, we don`t.

We  need to desire this thing  or that thing constantly:

the new car, the new woman or man, the new boat, the

new house and a constant variety of food. Buy this

eat that, eat that buy this - that`s what our society is telling

us - "Hurry up and buy, buy, buy!"  And it`s not surprising

because our culture is centred around the marketplace,

not the temple.

Our culture, our civilization encourages the monkey--like mind.

In India they have a temple which on some level encourages us

to watch the endless train of thought whistling through our brains.

The idea  is first of all is to recognize your own monkey-like mind -

that it exists - then get past that constant distraction and compulsion.

by sitting still and watching the action. At the monkey temple the same action

is going on inside and outside your head: it`s like a reflexion!

It`s a very elegant way to learn.

If you sit still for a while - do a little sitting - watch the T..V screen

inside  you, listen and listen some more until you tune in

You`ll notice there are all kinds of  things you can do with  your

brain more entertaining than watching the T.V. tube.

For example, if you let the silence reign just for

a little while, you will hear voices from across

the globe,  voices you`ve never met.  Our mind

is like a radio that  both receives and projects.

If you project your mind outwards in humility and love

and with a prayerful attitude call greetings and ask

ask the saints and bodhisattvas to help you  accomplish some

task - chances are you will find  help.

if you really pay attention that day and the next

couple of days you will be able to sense if you`ve

been given strength and assitance. And you will start to build a

relationship with these many minds  who somehow form one

consciousness beyond  death.

If outloud you say, " O you saints and bodhisattvas

help me and give me strength  in our task to liberate mankind. Thank

you for the holy vows that you have taken

to  help  and stay with us until we  are free.

Close as I can, I will walk a path to join you in your holy chapel."

Something like this.  The words don`t matter so much

if you open your heart and speak with love,

even if you believe no one`s out there, say the words.

I was pretty damn sure that no  one was out there.

No conscious Lord of the clouds, no Lord of the

Meeting Rivers.

Say the words anyway, shout them from a cliff top,

or shout them from a rooftop. Shout them in anger,

 shout the words with hate.

But if you can find one place in your heart that`s honest,

one person or one thing you love, say the words to that love,

say the words to that person.

Even if you  think no one could possibly hear you,

say the words.

Even if you are certain the world`s a cold machine.

say the words of your love

Say them out loud so you can hear yourself say them,

even if you`re certain there is no consciousness

in this galaxy that can absorb your words.

Our science is certain of so much... except it is

admittedly ignorant of the entire sub atomic world

and all the greatest mysteries of the One Who Is..

Creating Us.

The modern, mechanical "RATIONAL" age has

placed a curse upon our souls - the curse is that we

truly believe the human mind is the only conscious mind

And that matter is only matter.

And that life is only life, and that`s it! And that

death is an absolute end, and there`s no crossing

over between the two.

          How sad! How erroneous.

That there are no voices to be heard, that there are no

minds who speak to us from across the globe, voices from

places we don`t imagine - voices from places we can`t begin

to imagine.

No travelling voices, no minds that can be heard,

no roads for travelling souls.

Except I hear them and I have for a long time. And

I started hearing thoughts of minds who didn`t need

to speak a word.

           And everybody can do this!

But we don`t, you know why? Because we don`t

sit still; we don`t have time.  There is something that

we need to buy.

                            communications are open."     Walker Ballantine

JIMMY GOES TO JAIL AND GOES THROUGH AN ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT --- HE LIVES WITH HIS WIFE AND EATS IN THE BACK YARD

                        PART ONE
                       __________

Jimmy was sitting at the kitchen table the other
morning trying to fix something that looked suspiciously
like a motor. It didn`t look as if he was going to get the
motor going for another month or two, so I wasn`t
forced to take it away from him quite yet.

I didn`t say anything to him because he`d had a rough
few months.
Any sudden sounds -  like closing a window, flushing a
toilet, or moving in your chair - he might start to cry or  leap
out of his chair  screaming. Any sudden motion he catches
out of the corner of his eye, it`d be the same thing.
He`d start to shudder. I don`t know where he learned
how to shudder like that, but he`s pretty good at it.
I had to be very careful about slamming a drawer shut or letting
the  screen door slam, or sneezing suddenly.  I didn`t want him to
jump up  and scream or cough or shout   In case he blew out his new dental
implants.

Some people do very well in jail. Jimmy was not one of those
people. His was naive, inexperienced. He thought people liked him
just because they smiled at him.
It`s not always wise to smile back.

Three months ago Jimmy went to town. He went
with his pal from up the lane. -his name is Jack
but everybody calls him The Axeman"  . He`s tall and has
huge shoulders. Not many wrestlers on the northern
circuit will fight him anymore
I heard this from "The Crusher" who fought the Axeman once:

"Right at the start of the second round, he CHANGED.
At the sound of the bell he landed on me just as I was
getting off the stool. He grabbed the stool and hit me with it
so hard I saw stars and was unconscious.
"He was   slavering like a   mad  dog"
" He was jumping up and down in his  corner like a gorilla.
growling and baring his teeth. I was afraid
he was going to bite me!"
          Crusher  said.
"I woke up two days later. I don`t mind being unconscious
sometimes.  When you`re unconscious you have no worries.
"But the show was finished 30 seconds into the second round.
Tickets were thirty dollars each. The audience expected a good show.
But the Axeman had no understanding or comprehension of
the word, "Entertainment.``He had gone to a more primitive
place - a place where you eat or you are eaten.  The word, "tickets"
 had no meaning to him."
( I`m  told, well, in fact I know Axeman had gone through
a "psychotic break". And the least thing a psychotic break
implies  is an extreme change in perspective. Unfortunately
there`s a change of personality, too. And this is usually not
a good thing...    I had a woman go through a psychotic break
on me -literally, when she was sitting on me and we were having
sex.  But that`s a tale for another time).

Crusher: "After I was knocked out on the mat, the Axeman
turned and faced the audience and started snarling at  the crowd
The crowd was half drunk  they   were  snarling, too.
Tthey were picking up chairs and throwing them into the ring.
Axeman was catching the chairs, biting them and throwing them back
then he went bounding off looking for a something sharp."
" It was chaos, a dangerous disaster.  Three referees had to
run in from the rink next door to start quieting the crowd They were using
hockey sticks, clubs, pepper spray, and some fool shot a taser
at this guy and hit him in the groin. Some security guys showed up
and they were all using shooting  the crowd with tasers.
Even that didn`t stop the howling mob. In fact, the mob got
worse.
Four bouncers had to carry The Axeman back to his dressing
room. A Shrink writing for the media talked about The Axeman`s
CHANGE. A psychotic Axeman simply couldn`t tell the difference between
an  entertainment event, and a mob that was trying to kill him.

So guess who did Jimmy went  to town with that same  night?
The Axeman! After he escaped.  He was Blind Jimmy`s travelling companion.
when Jimmy went to town that night several months  ago.
The two seemed to understand each other. This is not always a good
thing.

They drove along the long dirt roads around here, down the hill into the Small City of
North Bay  Jimmy was driving Jones`s wife`s  car.   It was illegal for Jimmy to drive a car
anywhere in Ontario. And it was a lifetime ban. He`d crashed everything after six cars
had been smashed up; he crashed a speedboat, a skidoo, and he even managed
to crack up a lawn tractor when he fell asleep in a stupor and drove it off a small cliff.
And as for Mr Axeman Jones it was illegal for him to set foot in the ring ever again;
it was illegal for him to work as a bouncer. .He`d escaped from a locked unit at the
Psychiatric Hospital on the Hill, way up Highway 11, right next to a swamp.
It was illegal for him to step in a bar. It was illegal for him to ride in a car
He was supposed to be behind bars
It was illegal for him to be anywhere at large. But he wanted to see his wife.

So the evening got off to a good start
and it just got better from then on!
It seems that the two of them
got carried away  in a large A&P supermarket
and had stolen ten T-bone steaks, two avacados and three gallons
of butterscotch ripple ice-cream. They were seen sneaking out the
back of the store through the butcher`s entrance.
A store clerk followed them.
Jimmy  put his booty in a burlap sack.

Axeman  went bounding off over a high back fence into someone`s
yard.  He`d hidden 4 T-bone steaks and a bottle of wine in his pants.
He caught his wife in the kitchen. He insisted that they go and sit down
and "Talk love." So he dragged her into the coat closet in the front hall
and made her sit in the corner (The ladies just love a quiet place).
He crawled in after her, blocked any escape route she might
have had, and insisted she drink some wine from the bottle,
while he burbled sweet nothings into her delicate ear.
She was not happy to see him even before he dragged
her down the hall..  He`d attacked her front door with a fire axe
only two weeks before.

Jimmy  entered Ernie`s Adult Books where he purchased
several magazines, and slipped quite a few more into the large
burlap sack he`d picked up at the butcher`s. He palmed  some
other items as well, though how you palm
a pink  two-foot dildo, no one has explained to me.
Jimmy jumped into his  car and threw the large
sack into the back seat.  The store employee wrote down
his license number and  he called the City police.

Here are  some are snippets from the police reports

"Mr Jones proceeded to visit several drinking establishments."
"In various bars he was seen trading T-bone steaks for whiskey.
He drank  several shot glasses of Seagram`s Canadian rye whiskey.
I counted 16 shot glasses  on the bar in the darkened room"
(Ye gods! I want a shot right now! Notice how the officer
tells  exactly what kind of whiskey Jimmy was drinking!")

"Tthe suspect ambled from the bar and stumbled  when he
opened the exit door."
The accused got into his vehicle.
I followed closely in my cruiser and radioed ahead to
the Provincial Police
"Officer Stevens from the highway unit joined me
in minutes, driving an unmarked police car and he followed
closely behind the accused"

This next from the OPP cop:

" Suspect was travelling out highway 63 towards Temiscaming,
driving slowly in order to keep the vehicle between the
white lines."
" I followed the accused closely
" I noticed the subject was drinking from a large bottle.
He was drinking in a jerky fashion.
"He threw his head back and appeared to be gargling
with the liquid in the bottle.   He did this repeatedly, and every
time he threw back his head to gargle, the car would weave
across the centre line of the highway."
"I then turned on the siren and overhead flashing lights.
I instructed the defendant to pull over, stop the vehicle and
remain in the car."
"I repeated these instructions several times through the
loudspeaker. Eventually the defendant did pull over, but he did
not follow my instructions."
"Instead he fell out of the driver`s door of his car
Then he crawled on hands and knees out onto the highway,
where he proceeded to vomit on the centre line for
at least approximately fifteen minutes."

One officer put up highway warning flashers
fifty feet on either side of where Jimmy was making a display of
himself. The flashers stopped traffic both ways on the
highway.  A crowd had gathered by the time Jimmy had
stopped puking - it was cyclic vomiting, actually.
The crowd was enjoying the entertainment and started
shouting jokes and encouragement to Jimmy and
the officer. "What you doing Jimmy? Calling for Bill.?
BIILLLL!  BIILLLL!"
Several other police cars showed up. The cop
who had taken the report of the theft in the grocery store
was reaching into Jimmy`s car.  Naturally he found the sack
and started pulling out the twenty or so fetish magazines.
He opened the page and started to laugh and shake his head.
He handed more copies to his fellow officers who
had shown up at the scene.  They all started to laugh
out loud.    Jimmy was still on all fours puking on
the centre line. And a crowd of cops were laughing.
standing above Jimmy

A young girl video-taped the  scene on her cell phone
and took it into Bell media office. The scene looked shocking
on the next day`s  six o`clock news.
It looked a lot worse than it was

Iit turns out, not only was Jimmy charged with four
counts of theft ,charged with distributing obscene materials,
careless driving, impaired driving, blocking  a public
thruway, mischief, resisting arrest and forceable
confinement.

Some of the police are still reading those mags.
I heard it was part of some rookie  initiation. The magazines are
l kept as evidence  even to this day,  Now everyone in town knows
what Jimmy likes - the spankings , the  butt plugs, the paddles, and the cane.
None of this was too surprising to anybody.

No one was shocked until they saw the big baby bonnets  ,
the adult sized baby diapers, and the adult sized  baby soother.
It was the soother that put my assistant over the top, sent her into
gales  of laughter.
"How are they supposed to have sex when he`s got that thing
in his mouth and he`s wearing a diaper?"
"Sex? Oh no... no sex!" They don`t have sex,"
I`m no expert but I suggest this is what they do:  His wife sits above him in a chair
wearing nylons and heels. She tells him to
hump a  pillow on the floor while he`s he`s  wearing his diaper.
She makes him put on his diaper and "masturbate for mommy".

"OOoo, it`s hard to talk about some of this stuff, but you know my
motto , `Get to heart of the story no matter how strange or twisted
it may be."
Mommy-wife  will have more fun later. For now she watches
her husband pumping on the pillow.
No hands!" she insists and she means it, too! She`s holding
a long very thin riding crop in one hand .  If he touches himself
with his hands, she`ll  whip  the hell out of him.

I understand their relationship has gone through some changes,
now that Jimmy`s back from jail. He has had some experiences in
the slammer that humbled him considerably. That`s what jail is
for - ha! ha! - to chastise you and get you in line, to give you an
attitude adjustment.
Well,  Jimmy certainly got one of those!

Now his wife has got a  big studded collar around his neck and he`s chained
to an iron post in the ground, right near his doghouse.
He has to act like a dog at all times and I`m told he has gotten
into the doggie act amazingly well. She feeds him in a big yellow plastic dish
in the back yard. She puts his dish on the grass near his  doghouse.
"No hands!" she calls out,  when he starts to eat.
And he obeys her, too.
They get along pretty well  now, better than before. She only
beats him when he keeps on barking and barking   for too long.

"WOULD SOME POWER THE GIFT TO GEE US, TO SEE OURSELVES AS OTHERS SEE US." VOODOO REMINISCENCES... DARK IMAGININGS

"WOULD SOME POWER THE GIFT TO GEE US

TO SEE OURSELVES AS OTHERS SEE US"    Robbie Burns

I`m coming out of the tunnel once again, not running.

But at least staggering uphill with a bad limp on my left side, and trying

not to spit up anything nasty in public.

The hog`s in the tunnel, the fat is in the fire. There`s no way

I can turn back now . I try to write as soon as I get out of bed

when I`m only 1/2 conscious, before I start taking myself too seriously

later in the day.

Some mad fool is revving up a large engine right beneath me. It`s

Blind Jimmy. He`s not to be trusted with anything more powerful than

a lawn mower motor in his go-cart. Even then he`ll crack something

up.

Drinking and driving is frowned upon these days. He`d better

not  do it again now...   In the old times, not so very long ago,

drinking and driving along these backs roads was considered more

of  a sport than a serious offense.  No longer.  Now drunk driving is

higher  in the criminal hierarchy than assault. And I should know.

Jimmy has racked up nine drunk driving convictions in a row.

When no one was crazy enough to lend him a car, he started

stealing other means of conveyance,     He ran a stolen skidoo right

smack into a pole.  No one was amused.

Well, O.K., I was a little amused. He managed to make it 500

yards, then smack!  He shouldn`t steal things because he gets

caught,quickly too.

He took my boat and that ride lasted 15 minutes before

disaster struck . Now I have half a boat. That was not amusing.

We`re putting an eight cylinder engine into the chassis of an

old Triumph TR6 sports car.  He`s sitting in it right now gunning the

motor right below me - eight cylinders without a muffler . It makes

an incredible noise. My chair is vibrating, I can`t hear anything at

all.. The fillings in my teeth my shake loose.

(Jimmy was always such a sensitive soul, considerate of other

people`s feelings.)  That prick!

I realize that the new clutch is in. That beast can go  zero to

sixty in what feels like a split second ( and in second gear it really

starts to fly!) But Jimmy will never reach second gear. All Jimmy has

to do is pop the clutch... And then...And then...

If he pops the clutch he`ll take off right out of my garage, the

engine screaming and red-lining all the way. He`ll go through my

neighbour`s wall about six feet off the ground... just above the

windows.

The doctor is restoring an eighteenth century log home from

the Ottawa Valley. It is quite dignified looking.  He stacks his

firewood a little too neatly for my taste...But he has really done me

no harm at all other than building a few  wood and cement

structures on my land, which I made him move immediately...He`s not

a bad quy.  I could do far worse for a neighbour. I could have me for

a neighbour!

He certainly doesn`t deserve to have this howling black-

snouted monstrosity bashing through his wall at six A.M.... when

he`s just starting to eat his  milk and Cheerios.

It would be a nasty surprise, a shock to the system.

That sort of surprise can change the way a man views the

world - some times permanently.

What he thought was sure and solid  -  in the blink of an eye -

can change into some wild and swaying nightmare motion. And the

terrible sounds of chaos... engine screaming, chunks of concrete

falling, and a crashing sound that he`ll never forget.

Even the birds on the lake are quiet after a sound like that.

I grab the keys  out of the ignition. I yank them away from

Blind Jimmy.  My legs are shaking, though I don`t want to admit it.

          Suddenly the silence seems loud.

My next door neighbour, the doctor, is not too fond of Blind

Jimmy. He thinks he`s mentally challenged... And he`s not too sure

about me. He squints when he looks my way... He believes I`ve got

some kind of intelligence, but he believes it to be of a deranged and

criminal kind.  Hell, that`s what I want him to think!  That`s the

image I intend to project...!

If people think you`re dangerous, that you`re unpredictable

because of some twisted psychosis the origin of which is deep in

some distant past, when there still were ghosts in Jamaica, when

voodoo masters used poisons from the puffer fish that could kill half

a man`s brain in three days, and when you`d dig him up, he had

no will of his own.

Coming from some dark past, blacker than midnight..Dark days

with wild electrical infusions that might be applied

to children as they slept  to cure dropsy or a nervous fever,

or fears too deep for any forms of psychiatry to deal with...

Deep into the night,  your doctor would come visit

you walking along Duppy Walk with only the stars as his guide.

and if nothing else worked, he`d give you 300 rear old rum.

And forms of telepathy  were well known, and messages were

passed without telephones, and it was assumed everybody knew this

and had this ability themselves.

Darkness out of which sea-birds would call pre-dawn and a

six year old blonde child would visit his Rastaferian friends a mile

down the beach at 5:00A.M. with three turkey vultures hopping

behind him everywhere he went.  He used to watch Clinton push his

dugout canoe across the tides in order to fish in some secret place

before the rising of the sun.

The doctor is not a stupid man and he suspects  I come for

just such a past.

The unpredictable bursts of gunfire don`t help either.

If people think you just might actually shoot them, they don`t come

on your land. This way I`m never bothered in the mornings. And the

afternoon`s tend to be quiet, too.

So I`ve tended to act a little crazier than I really am, over the

years.

The other morning my neighbour and I were having a

conversation. We were shouting across our yards, so I walked up to

his car to talk to him as I was sipping my 7:00 A.M. Irish coffee.

Unfortunately. he started to get insulting with me. The

situation started to get ugly.  As I leaned

down towards his driver`s window, he said a nasty thing to me:

he said, "Do you realize that you`re naked?"

I imagine he sees me as some kind of rabid dog, drooling and

limping, who must be kept at bay. He knows I can jump his fence so

he`s started carrying a taser with him at all times and all hours

these days.

He thinks I should be institutionalized. And he`s not

alone in this opinion.

Yesterday I had two unpleasant encounters with two older

ladies...

I offended them. I`m not sure how; I`m not sure why. My

appearance may have something to do with it... The way I lurch when

I walk might have put the old gals off. The long uncombed hair,(I`ve

been religiously instructed by the Old Testament never to brush

it); and I`ve been told the big wild eyes... can be disturbing.

Perhaps they think I`m heavily intoxicated... Though I can

stagger even when I`m  stark, raving sober!

They may have the wrong idea about me.

Older ladies have always looked at me with dire suspicion.

Since I was sixteen, they have always made unpleasant sounds and

judgments in my direction.

         Though when  heavily intoxicated on

Jamaican  over proof (full strength) white  rum, and when perhaps

overmedicated on drugs prescription and otherwise, I imagine a man

can look pretty unpleasant. So reason might be on their side.

"You`re  walking like you`ve got a peg leg!" one ex- wife

shrieked in laughter at me.

Then in the Liquor Control Board of Ontario  (the LCBO) just

the other day, the salesman called back at me,"Hey! No passing out

in line!"

I was sure he was joking, but maybe not.

I`m not certain how these people see me, I can only hope their

thoughts are sweeter than what the expressions on their faces tend

to suggest...   I can only hope their thoughts are kinder than

what I think they might be.

The City Sheriff, who I know rather well, says: "What are you

doing? "You`re an educated man! You can`t just walk around in

painter`s coveralls and dress like a bum, with your hair wild like

that, and you looking insane!"

""Hell, you are an officer of the Court. You`ve got a reputation

to maintain!`

"I know. I know," I say to him.

Later when alone, sitting by the lake, a bottle of rose in one

hand and watching a glorious sunset as evening comes on, listening

to the mating call of all those monogamous loons.

I raise a toast to the evening star. And I think, "I do. I have a

reputation to maintain!"

" Here goes!" I call out over the bay and blow a long clear

note on my trumpet, which echoes  several miles across the calm

waters, and comes back at me as a beautiful sound from the cliffs

across the lake.

And that`s exactly what I`m doing...

                Maintaining it!

THE ONLY CURE FOR LOVE - A WHIPPING IN A DARK HOUSE!

I woke up this morning and I knew where I was, which is
always a good sign. My mind felt like it had passed through a
food strainer. My eyes were red, I felt off-balance somehow...
as if I was stumbling. The cupboard was bare. The fridge was a
horror I could not face; the bathroom looked as if someone
had killed a chicken in it.
My eyes were out of focus and I had a general sense of doom
which loosened my bowels and made me want to apologize
for everything I had ever done.
There was no one here to apologize to... thank God!
Had there been someone here, I might have said something I
really and truly meant. And this always gets me into trouble.
They haven`t quite figured out how to formulate a crime
out of "verbal assault" (unless you happen to spray the other person
with spittle when you`re screaming at him. ) This is
 good.
One thing I`ve noticed about the Criminal Code - the sentences never get lighter, as time goes by, and once they figure out how to codify a new crime, the crime stays on the books: it never leaves, it is there for good. You can still get 14 years for buggery in Canada
The Code never gets lighter; it keeps getting heavier, and heavier until we have no civil rights at all.

Ha! Ha! And now I`m way off topic.

Yes, waking up, feeling horrible, jumping when I see my own shadow, afraid to look in the mirror... ... When I feel like this, I usually  have a stiff drink and turn to Shakespeare. He`s always worth a laugh or two.  And the fact that he seems to know me is a comfort. When I wander through his pages, he always cheers me up.

I`m sure more people would read him if they hadn`t met him first in English class, if they realized his savage nature. Shakespeare is a beast! He has the big mind, a nasty mind capable of expressing some of the ugly truths about being women and men. And he`s not afraid to say exactly what he means

It is from Shakespeare that I get the above  quotation
To paraphrase:

The cure for madness is a whip in a dark house.

Love is a kind of madness.

So the cure for love may also be  a whipping in a dark house.

So speaks Rosalind in,  "As You Like It" 3.2

"Love is merely a madness, and I tell you
deserves as well a dark house and a whip as madmen
do: and the reason why they are not so punished
and cured is, that the lunacy is so ordinary that the
whippers are in love too..."

I had the privilege of studying with Northrope Frye
for four years at Victoria College, University of Toronto. He said sometimes he thought Shakespeare`s comedies are his best works, the ultimate culmination of his talent
I agree with him. The character of Rosalind is not as well known as Lear or Hamlet, but boy is she deep! And she`s funny at times, also, so I can forgive her the sadism of some of her comments and actions.
Forgive her sadism?  What am I talking about? I`ve always
encouraged a  healthy sadism. Read the part about how she has tortured a young man in love with her in order to cure him of love.
Wow! A bug on the end of a pin maybe feels less pain.
To be honest I find the notion of a whipping in a dark house arousing. And sadistic ladies have always had a certain appeal to me... So you can see why I enjoy Rosalind. I feel as if I`ve met her already! And I had a really rough time when I did.

People don`t read Shakespeare so much these days and that`s fine with me because that means I get to pick from his treasure house alone as I please.
One thing I have to say about Willie, apart from his being a beast, is:

What a wild garden he has! There are vegetables in it
that no one has met yet, and creatures there that no one will ever name.

His characters are archetypes. I have seen them
walking past me in the crowds of Main Street.

Reading his plays I encounter an understanding so fundamental as to be preternatural.
I hear his peoples` voices speaking across the centuries, whispering down the wind.

Here`s a little savagery.

"There have been cuckolds ere now,
And many a man there is (even at this present,
Now, while I speak this) holds his wife by th`arm,
That little thinks she has been sluiced in`s absence,
And his pond fished by his next neighbour (by
Sir Smile, his neighbour)"

Should all despair who has unfaithful wives,
the tenth of mankind would hang themselves. (paraphrase)

There`s no cure for it: it is a bawdy planet.

ROVING REPORTER RANTS: FEELING MY WAY TO THE BLUE GUITAR

ROVING REPORTER RANTS: FEELING MY WAY TO THE BLUE GUITAR:          I was driving down a hill into the town on my small red bicycle. it`s  a woman`s bike, but it`s small and  light...

Sunday, March 31, 2013

The gulls were flying over the town here about 4:30 AM and later. I took a boat one time
way out in Lake Nippissing, and I saw where they sleep. Literally thousands of them
sleep on the same smallish island, basically just a dome of rock extending up over the water.
I guess gulls don't need much privacy.
I was thinking of a song I heard years ago when I was living in a driftwood hut
on a peninsula extending out into the sea from the Island of Formentera, Spain.
It's a smaller island 5-10 miles off the more popular, Ibiza.
I'm going to see right now if I can find the song and attach it to this blog.

FEELING MY WAY TO THE BLUE GUITAR

I was driving down a hill into the town on my small red bicycle.

it`s  a woman`s bike, but it`s small and  light and it`s fast off the

mark. It would cost me a fortune to get it`s equivalent in a shop that

sells racing bikes.

I`m told I look silly riding it. I`m six

feet and about 230 pounds, so I suppose I do look odd

on that little red bike with no crossbar.

"It`s good for my ego", I`m thinking . If some kind of humility is the

goal.  Maybe looking ridiculous every once in a while will help.

Peeling down the big hill, seeing the lakes beyond the small

city,  at that speed trying not to have a mystical experience.

A poem`s been in my head these last few days,

a poem by Wallace  Stevens. It goes something like,

"Things exactly as they are
You can play on the blue guitar."

So I`m zipping into town, sun shining on my face.  After

February, which has been a month of utter and ignominious

darkness, worse than usual, the sun feels great on my face.

I`m  smacking  my lips thinking of the three bottles of sherry I was

going to be able to buy at the liquor store, with the twenty dollars I

had left.

I was coasting straight down Cassels Street directly,

when I got this feeling. I`ve learned not to ignore this feeling, when

it comes, which is not often....it`s  usually significant.

I got the sense that I was to turn left and go into the small

forgotten mall at the bottom of the hill.

       So I did.

There at the edge of the mall, I see an old dusty looking

small used furniture shop. I get off the bike and walk over

and peer into the window.  The front window was full of oddities,

oddities I appreciate like old Export A tobacco tins, old pliars and

ancient metal files.

I opened the shops door, walked in and said hello.  A woman

showed up out of the back. We said a few words, nothing about

music...

She said, " Here,  I`ve got something to show you. "

She walked through a door that led down into the basement,

leaving me in her shop with all her valuables.

She re-emerged from the basement after a few minutes.

She was carrying an expensive-looking guitar case She set it down

gently on the glass counter.

She opened the case for me and said,  "Take a look at this."

And there it was before me, a blue guitar.

So I picked it up and held it above my head. It was damn

nearly as light as an old Martin. I looked at the neck . The neck was

was straight and the steel strings were beautifully close to the

fretboard.

It takes a lot of strength for a guitar neck to hold the stress

of tightly wound steel strings.  So steel string guitars are often quite

heavy to lift. This one was light as a feather. This is a very good sign

We bargained a bit, but I`m really not that good at it.  I was

broke and not in the mood to buy a guitar. Whatever the price

it was going to cut dangerously into next week`supplies.

But I knew it would be a bad thing, a spiritual letdown in the

universe, if I didn`t follow this feeling that destiny had taken

a hand in the life of those around me

        The shop-woman`s name was Pauline.

Pauline and I made a deal, and she was kind to me, letting me

have it for half the asking price.

She said, `The asking price for this make of guitar

would normally be three or four times this price,  musicians tell

me. I don`t normally sell guitars. I sell furniture. But I had a funny

feeling about this one, so I set it aside.`

She said, "Perhaps because it`s blue.  I knew someone would be

coming for it. I just didn`t know who."

Living alone for the last few years I`ve done some thinking.

Trying to write these books, and taking myself too seriously, I

had been a selfish prick for the last considerable while. Don`t

get me wrong, you`ve go to be extremely selfish, arrogant and

determined just to get to the typewriter .But I`d carried it to an

extreme.

I`d also been deeply suspicious about women for many years

and that did not help the overall situation.

I`d turned into a hermit, and something in me wouldn let

me even walk to the post office. To mail a book to my

reputable publisher who has been waiting for... for over a year.

And the book was finished! There was nothing more to be done.

I just can`t seem to do anything anyone expects of me. I

can`t seem to follow orders.I won`t even obey the orders I give

myself! Go figure.

This is very odd, and more than a tad disturbing.

I decided I was going to something do for someone else

every once in a while.  So the blue guitar I was buying as a gift for my

little daughter. "Happy Easter," I was thinking. I looked up. The wind

was high, the sky was blue.

                Just like the guitar.

Somewhere I could hear the angels singing.

ZEN IS THE ZONE

SCHOOL FOR MYSTICS
___________________________

A zen master was  asked what zen is like.

He answered, "It is like sitting up in bed in utter darkness and reaching behind you for your pillow."

A focus without thought, a concentrated mind.

I was playing tennis the other day and I was running hard,
dodging and stabbing with my racket, just reaction - no time for thought and breathing hard.

I was in a very pleasant place, no thoughts... just eager to react. It was like a dance, a "cosmic dance" as my opponent said,
but then again - he had eaten some hallucinogenic (sacred) mushrooms, and he really didn`t care if he won or lost. This can be
a little distracting, but not for long.

I was in the "zone".  Sportsmen write of the zone, a place of pure mind and reaction.

You don have to be sitting still to have a mystical experience. Lately I`ve been trying to get into that rooted sense of universal oneness on my bicycle.
But there`s too much snow and ice up here still in the Great White North, and working yourself into a trance state at 30 miles per hour can be suicidal.
I don`t advise doing your mystical experiments at high speeds -  though sometimes in a car late at night driving into a turn at ninety miles an hour, passing through patches of fog and mist, this can come close...

SCREAMING BANSHEE ON A SUNDAY MORN

Blind Jimmy isn't blind. He gets that way when he drinks. "Blind drunk", as kids, we all thought this phrase was named after Blind Jimmy, or should have been.
He rents some of the rooms downstairs, or so we'd been told.

He came into my office the other day soaking wet. Now my office is not a formal place. In fact. my secretary hs been on her annual vacation for the past 13 weeks.
But soaking wet! And there were a few people waiting in the outer room.
He walks in and he says, "Those fuckers!"
           "Who you talking about?"
I ask.
"Those guys in the highway patrol. They took my car off the road!"
"Jim, you're drunk!" I say, "You're pissed! Eight sheets to the wind! You're drooling, too! Like a hungry dog, a whipped cur! You're slavering like a beast who has met his doom! You're lucky you're not in the slammer! In fact, I should report you now! Ha! Ha!"
"You can't drive smashed out of your mind like this --- at least, not any more!"

He stared at me as if he had no idea what I am, let alone who I am, "No, no!" he shouts, "I started to drink after they took my car!"
It was starting to make sense to me now. And the truth I was beginning to see was an ugly truth - one I'd rather keep suppressed, repressed, and blocked in my uncobscious. But this was not to be, "You came by boat?" I ask.
"I came by boat," he said, standing there dripping on my brightly patterned wool rug,"
... only I didn't make it all the way..."
"You bastard! You took my boat!"
"Yeah, I had to. I wasn't going to walk all the way from town."
I'm thinking, "You didn't have to come here at all!"

I have a very light weight little eleven foot racing boat, which is really too small to take out onto the water, when the big lake starts to blow and roll.
You really shouldn't launch it when the waves are high and white-capping. Unless you really know what you're doing.
It's a delicate balance. The boat is wooden and like a feather and I have it dramatically overpowered. I used to have what was called a "20h" on it. And it moved like a bat out of hell back then.
But I've since had a fifty horsepower Mercury
outboard  chopped and shortened and reduced down to almost nothing,  and added a tiny brass prop with evil thin slicing blades, which will cut a finger off a fish at fifty yards.

This boat has its name emblazoned in flames along its wood-stained sides. Written in flames is the name "Run-a Risk" which should give you a clue as to what sort of fun you're going to have if you choose to kneel on the plywood floor and clutch the wheel and the molded sides and take off towards the horizon.
If you want to order the little beast, it's called a "Foo-ling". You can order the plans. You have to build it yourself  The bow comes to a sharp, elegant point. It's  3 1/2 inches thick at the tip. The sides are not deep. You're about seven to eight inches off the face of the water at the boat's highest point.
I highly recommend it, if you can still bend like a sixteen year old, and if you still have the same insane desire for jaw-clenching, shuddering speed that many teenagers share, until their first major crash, that is.
Some people maintain this need for a bone-shaking thrill far into those later years, when I'm told, 'one really ought to know better.'

The transom is teak, and all you boaters out there know why. Though I had to reinforce it with an inch of oak, so it could stand the thirty extra horsepower I added only recently.
When your motor weighs more than your entire boat, you know you may face certain structural difficulties, not to mention legal ones.
(Boat structure and bone structure can suffer and the fines can be enormously expensive if they ever catch you, which is highly unlikely).
Still the transom's always threatening to tear off, so I had some  old iron railway brackets screwed into the hull. And then, of course, I added lots more waterproofing, ha! ha! Lots more fiberglass under the wooden carcass of the boat. Mostly to "save the intetgrity of the hull."
So at least no water boils in from below. But that's not really the problem. You're going too fast for that to happen.
But when you hit a solid wave the wrong way, you'll  immediately get drenched from either side. And you'll get a smack in the face from the water harder than any human being is likely to slap you for the rest of your life.
I have what is called a"dead man throttle" which works on a heavy spring, so when you're thrown loose from inside the boat, at least the motor quits immediately, and you can swim to the boat from wherever in the water you happen to land, when you regain consciousness.
This is the theory, and I'm not going to lie to you like some kind of craven cowardly snivelling swine and pretend that what actually happens has any ressemblance to what is supposed to happen theoretically. No, nothing usually comes out the way we plan it to -  and I suppose life would be terribly dull if it did.
Now  don't squeeze the pin and lock the dead man throttle full throttle open at top speed, if you have any intention of changing your kneeling-sitting-cringing position  by even a little. The delicate balance which you've become a part of at sixty miles an hour screaming along the crest of a breaking wave - it really won't tolerate any shifting of your body position whatsoever.
Think of surfing, except you're riding above the curl rather than below it. And you're travelling at a far, far greater speed in a motorized device.
Does it take the poetry out of it? No, I don't think so. By no means!

Though it is illegal. In fact, it's highly illegal and I shouldn't be writing this and sharing it in public... but what a blast it is when you're howling along on the crest of a wave at fifty or sixty miles an hour!
It doesn't sound that fast compared to some of those cigarette boat ocean racers. But those boats travel four or five feet above the water line. This little wooden platform is seven or eight inches tops above the  waterline.  And you're blasting along with your nose practically in the water. The joy is to find that delicate point of equilibrium between the wave and the boat and the motor and you.
The engine weighs more than the boat.  You yourself weigh more than the boat. And the wave below you is inexorably heavier than you plus the boat plus the motor, plus any thoughts you might have in your mind.

I once piloted a 32 foot  Botved cabin cruiser from Vero Beach Florida to Orillia, Ontario, and I was crossing Chesepeake Bay in twenty-five foot waves. I wasn't very experienced at the time and I had the cabin cruiser surfing across those waves.
The boat  could cruise at 32 knots and while I had the boat surfing across the waves, it was travelling half again as fast.  But then when that boat stopped surfing, its bow would dig into the wave in front of it and about two feet of water would wash over the entire 32 feet. One of the cabin windows was open and I soaked the owner in his bed, and he wasn't too happy about it when he finally made it  back up on deck.
Also the sound of the twin props howling every time the wave behind lifted the stern out of the water, it was a loud horrible sound,
and so at least the owner was awakened and had a chance to guess what was happening about twenty seconds before every inch of him  and all his possessions were inundated.
Imagine lying almost asleep, safe in you own bed, or so you think, just as someone pours a large swimming pool right through your house.
But that was a real boat and really dangerous situation. It was a different time and a very different story, but funnily enough it was an experience very close to the one Blind Jimmy had before he showed up in my office just the other morning.
He drove the bow of my  boat right into a wave, almost right through the wave. He broke the boat right in half, and he rearranged the angle  which his head sits upon his shoulders, perhaps permanently.

So I asked him quietly, "Where's the boat now?"
He said, "I got  the bow pulled up on shore."
             "Where's the motor?" I ask.
              "The motor sank," he tells
me. "It's not far from shore, but you can't see it. We'll have to get divers."

He couldn't see it because forty feet from shore here, the bottom's 120 feet down. And even in the summer, once you dive more than thirty-five feet below the surface, you hit what they call "the thermal." Once you pass through the thermal and go below it, the water temperature stays about the same summer or winter. In winter there's three feet of ice on the surface of the water.
So, yes, I needed to hire divers and the divers had to wear wet suits and then couldn't stay in the water for longer than about ten minutes at a time at a hundred feet below the surface.
Luckily the necessary chains are readily available in this part of the world.

More of this story later. I'm going to sit in a comfortable
armchair in silence and alone. And I'm going to drink a bottle of whiskey or perhaps two bottles of whiskey before I talk to another living soul.
My only consolation at the moment is it looks as if Blind Jimmy will have to see a chiropractor for a least a year and a half in order to have his neck adjusted until he looks half-way normal again.
We don't have to worry too much about Blind Jimmy's appearance. He never did look more than half-way normal to begin with.

POSTSCRIPT

The Foo-Ling,  is closer to a surfboard than a real boat. I was used to handling it. Though when you're blasting along with your nose practically in the water, the joy is to find that delicate point between top speed and disaster.
But if anything should break loose, for example, if a fuel tank starts leaping around in the front compartment, you can't lean forward and attempt to tie it down with the throttle locked open and the boat skittering along wildly and slapping against it's fin in the water.. even if you're in some kind of a race.
You really only have a few seconds at the time, though it seems much longer later, as you relive the experience  . It's best to make the smart choice, even though I never have managed to do so myself.

So if any  children are reading this article, slow the boat, even if your're going to get soaked or swamped. Paddle or swim the boat home, even if the heavy waves sweep you twenty-five miles off course.

If for example a seagull  smacks into your face, and you have to peel blood and feathers out of your eyes, remember to concentrate and don't move much,
and slow the boat down.
And if that thirty gallons of gas in a bright red tank starts to leap around in front of your nose, don't worry about losing the race.
Forget about losing the race to some presumptuous fool. Forget the  jackass who had the gall to speed by your dock  at seven A.M. on a quiet Sunday morning, showing everybody he has the fastest boat in seven towns.
Be the bigger man. At seventeen years of age, it's easy. Lose the race.
Don't gun the boat and scream across the water after the idiot. Don't  lean and reach after that flying gas tank, even if you think he's making a fool of you in front of all the women.
Slowly and gradually reduce speed. Do the sensible thing.  Twenty years down the line you'll be glad you did.
Or maybe you won't be glad.

Even though ridicule, hilarity and ugly insurance claims might follow you for the rest of your days... Remember kids, slow the boat down.

Also, it's best to be sober, when you drive a little monster boat like that.... unless you're like me and your acuity improves with every shot of whiskey you have, in which case you'll be fine.
In Blind Jimmy's case, drunk or sober, he should never set foot in such a craft. His balance never was good at any time, and his focus is not improving as the years go by.
The problem with this little boat at high speeds under rough conditions is that it flips.
Imagine a motor screaming like a banshee at high revs, then screaming even louder because the prop is out of the water, and the boat's doing an arc in the air as it turns over. And you're in the water, too, and the boat flies about 30 feet in the air and then smacks facedown in the water right beside your head.
And all of a sudden there's silence. Bacause the engine's in the water too, and the howling has ceased. And the silence is wonderful and all the world makes sense.
(I'm told some of the cottagers along the shore cheered at the sudden quiet.
I'm thinking of a time quite early one Sunday morning when the lake was calm, and you could hear people talking  from miles away across the water. Both before and after the  crash).

Anyway, joy is joy, and you've gotta  take it where you can find. Even if half your neighbours look at you sometimes as if they hate you.
Not to worry, these are the ones who probably just pretend to like you when they smile. As a wife of mine once said to me, "You think people like you just because they smile at you!"

             No longer.

Respectfully submitted, etc. etc.

SUCH MIGHTY MYSTERIES, COULD WE EXIST WITHOUT THEM? EVERY ANGEL IS TERRIBLE GRADE 4 IN THE SCHOOL FOR MYSTICS

The above title is a quotation, I believe, from the German poet, Rilke.
I found it in a very old notebook of mine. This makes me think I was smarter than I now think I was, when I was nineteen.

Here are some other quotations from the same scrap of paper:

              "Every angel is terrible."

"For beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror we can just barely endure."

                "Always distracted by anticipation."

                 "To wish wishes no longer."

"Not that you could bear the voice of God"

Now I'm going to have to go back and study the fellow again... But his story as I remember it is this:
Let's say his name was Rainer Maria Rilke. I think this is correct, but I'm not sure. Remembering a time 30 years ago, is for me like remembering a dream.
He was a young man, and obviously a genius, so this older woman found him and set him up in a tower. She gave him a place where he could do his work. And by God, he did it!
She was right and he wrote magnificent things, like the quotes above.

But let's go on in my dream fantasy. I know it sounds like a fairy tale.
She set him up in a tower on the side of a hill, overlooking a wide, low valley... and farther away there were other hills.
This area was subject to some fantastic storms.
And in this tower, lightning struck, lightning in a bottle, he had Mystical Experiences
of the Divine. Now the divine goes higher than the highest star and deeper than the the deepest subterranean cavern, under the lowest hell. It's like when lightning strikes from high up in the clouds
to deep into the earth.
This is one way to describe a Mystical Experience, and make no mistakes, in the School For Mystics, a mystical experience is the goal.
No kidding around, I honestly believe that mystical experiences are the highest form of learning we can approach as a species, because science and religion, emotion and cold analysis... and a sense of Wonder... all combine in one Knowing.
I'm also quite sure that "Awareness"
this is the purpose of mankind. Through us the universe becomes aware of itself,
We are not separate from God; we partake of God. God is the universe around us the organizing of atoms bemeath our feet, and the  organising of intergalactic beauty. The Universe seems to be intelligently creating itself.
A scientist studying the mysteries of the quantum world knows that his awareness
changes the reality of what he is watching. Through the microscope, his awareness changes the equation, the gestalt of what he is watching. His awareness must be considered to be part of the equation.
Mind affects the ever-changing structure of reality.
I'm almost positive that our awareness changes what is happening in the sky above us, though our concentration cannot usually focus long enough to see the change... macrocosm
and microcosm. Does one reflect the other? Is the only difference their size.Is their everchanging nature essentially the same?

These are questions for Grade Four of the School For Mystics. And I gotta tell ya,  I don't have the answers.
The answers are in the Process,
the Flux, the River that Heraclitus said we cannot step in twice.

By the way, here are three mystics that all came out of Germany, or the area we now call Germany - Hildegarde of Bingen,
Meister Eckhart, and Rainer Maria Rilke.

"I am the living and fiery essence that glows in the beauty of the fields."Hildegarde
of Bingen. (somewhere around the twelth century)
This is from memory and I'm getting sleepy again, so please excuse any
misquotations and spelling mistakes.

                               Respectfully submitted.  R.R.

RUMOURS OF ALBINO SHARKS - SUPERSTITION IN THE DARK CONTINENT

"I have immortal longings in me."

"I will praise any man who will praise me."                                    William Shakespeare
The doctor who lives next door was shouting over into my yard, when he saw me standing naked with coffee cup in hand gazing off towards the vistas in the East.
He was shouting and he's usually a quiet man, so this was significant.  He called: "WHO WAS THAT MANIAC DRIVING YOUR CAR OUT LAST NIGHT AT 3A.M? HE GOT SOME FOOL TO PLAY THE BAGPIPES ACROSS THE BAY!"
"THEN HE LIFTED A HUGE STONE OUT OF THE BACK OF YOUR CAR WITH ONE HAND!  HE KICKED OPEN YOUR DOOR AND THREW THE BOULDER IN! IT LOOKED
LIKE A HUGE INDIAN HEAD WITH FEATHERS!"
Then in a stage whisper  he says, "I was going to call - but some things shouldn't be spoken of... So I'm maintaining silence, as we agreed." Then he said something disturbing, he said, "He looked like some dark Caliban."

People can get up to some pretty strange things up here in the dark, when there's nothing to do except look at the ducks for entertainment.
The bad weather around here often comes suddenly from the east. Quickly lightning begins to strike along the shore, and if you're in a tin boat floating perilously over this deep lagoon, you'd better get the hell out.
Actually, so far the lake is called bottomless. The crew hired by the government shows up every four or five years and they try to find the bottom with heavy measured chains - they
have never had enough chains to find the bottom.
I'm thinking, "In this 'modern age' surely there must be a way to measure depth more quickly.
But a family runs the business and I guess they are funded by the federal government, so they keep trying in the old way. I'm thinking, what about sonar? But the chains are too much fun. They provide a Gothic flavor to the whole operation... And who wants to find the bottom anyway?

Sometimes sitting the local bar, 1,000 feet down a dirt road from my house, I sit quietly and listen. The people from along the peninsula keep whispering two tables over from me about, "the best place to hide a body."
I already know, but I'm not about to interrupt the good clean fun of my neighbours.
This is the land of 100,000 lakes and a million miles of muskeg. Bodies are lost up here even when no one is trying to hide them.
I also hear them talk about the fresh water sharks that come and go across vast distances. After all, the caverns beneath our lake ( as everybody knows) are directly connected with caverns beneath rivers and lakes approaching the Gulf of Mexico.
I heard Suzie, a fine looking lusty lass with muscular thighs and knees that can crack walnuts, I heard her whisper to 3 girls from the northern volleyball team, she said: "In the winter, that's where they go to feed. Those poor Cajuns! Should we warn them?"

Your roving reporter is above superstition, so I merely report this story.
