HOW TO STAY IN THE NOW – SKILLS ESSENTIAL FOR HAPPINESS

HOW TO STAY IN THE NOW
__________________________This is a tricky business, but an essential
skill to have if you wish to be happy.
I’ll quote a few people from different paths
and different centuries – on this subject.
‘THE GREAT WAY IS EASY FOR HE WHO HAS
NO PREFERENCES.” 6th patriarch of zen
“ WHAT IS IT THAT YOU LACK THAT MAKES
YOU WALK BACK AND FORTH SO?”
(Master sitting in a big bird’s nest in a tree, at a
crossroads, shouting down at the people going to
town and back.)
“THERE’S NOWHERE TO GO BUT WHERE
YOU ARE.”  Johnny Rock
(After hitchhiking ten thousand miles)
“BEFORE ABRAHAM WAS, I AM.”
Jesus Christ
(And then they threw rocks at him, saying.
“Blasphemy!”)
“AT THE STILL POINT OF THE TURNING
WORLD, THERE THE DANCE IS.”
T.S. Eliot
“TO LIVE, TAKING THE TIMELESS OUT OF
TIME, THIS IS THE OCCUPATION
OF THE SAINT.”   T.S. Eliot
“THE PAST DOES NOT EXIST. THE FUTURE DOES
NOT EXIST. ONLY THE PRESENT EXISTS.
AND THE PRESENT, WITH ITS MANY DAWNS,
IS A CONTINUOUS BIRTHING.”
Words of Heraclitus, cheerfully rewritten by
Walker Ballantine
“ WHERE YOUR TREASURE IS, THERE SHALL YOUR
HEART BE ALSO.”  Jesus Christ
“THE HERO OF MY BOOK IS TIMELESSNESS”
(Henry Miller, “The Tropic Of Cancer”)
“WHEN THE LAKE OF THE HEART BECOMES
PEACEFUL AND CALM, THE REFLECTION
OF THE ORDINARY MAN BECOMES THE
REFLECTION OF A SAINT.”

GET ME A ROCKING CHAIR

The phrase, "Get Me a Rocking Chair",
is an old blues standard... and that phrase is about the only thing I kept in the lyrics of the song.
I was already using a riff on the base strings of my Stratocaster when I played the song. Terry Lucenti, lead guitar player of John Rock and the Batch, strengthened the bass riff, and added his leads.
As I say, I changed all the words and the band howled as I sang it. What a ball! The crowd loved it. And (in all humility) we rocked the joint, as per usual.

Some of my favourite words from the song:

"I'll be Mr Wrong for you, sweetheart,
And you can be Mrs Right!"

HOP SCOTCH AND HONEY PIE 2X

This song is an outtake from my "It's So Serious!" album. But the song cooks like mad.
So I'm bringing it out to the fore now.
There's also a story which the song embodies, which I think I'd better talk about now.
The hopscotch is what men do in order to get next to a woman. The honey pie is kind of self-explanatory; it's part of a woman's body and psyche. The chalice it embodies has even been called the holy Grail.

I heard this quote in a movie: "If you're not thinking about pussy, you're not concentrating." The quotation applies to this song. And our hero in the song sure was
concentrating.

He discovers the heroine of the song
standing with her back to him in a restaurant.
She is ordering some take out food and she is bending forward over the counter reading the menu and talking to the waitress.

She is a light-skinned Jamaican woman with an ample posterior... and she's wearing
a tight white dress.

words of the song:

"I saw her standing in the restaurant
I said, "Baby, you are what I want"
She was leaning over the counter top.
        I prayed... she wouldn't stop."

they leave the restaurant:

"Then I saw her walking on down the                            street
I said, "Sister, you are what I need."
She said, "Mister, you might be right
But if you want to be with me tonight -"

( Hook)

"There's hop scotch and then there's honey pie
You gotta take what you want before you die
If you don't learn to take what you  need...
You're never gonna lay a glove on me!"

"I put my suitcase into my hand
I followed her across the land
Now she's my woman and I'm her man
Because I finally understand..."

(Bridge)

She say:   "Don't you cross the street
                    Without your '45
I say sister don't you worry about me
You got yours, I got mine."

... saxophone solo and repeat ...

"ROOFS OF NOTRE DAME" a song - TRIBUTE TO BARRY GREEN

My piano player died today. Barry Green will be missed by half this city.
He wrote Roofs of Notre Dame with me. He's doing the music and I'm singing
the lyrics I wrote.

You can feel Barry's heart through the notes of his keyboard.

I SEE YOU IN YOUR SEARCHING

I see you in your searching
Tense and clinging hard
Directionless searching
I see your beauty there
Your despair and uncertainty
As how to speak to me
Or hold your cup, or smile,
And your eyes unsteadily;
Oh how I love you
And cannot help but feel
That everything you need
I have, and will give to you.
